FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ClimaGuard SPF™?

  • ClimaGuard SPF is an innovative window glass technology from Guardian Industries that will block 99.9% of ultraviolet radiation. This coated glass product is manufactured by Guardian for fabrication into insulating glass units used in residential window applications.

Why do I need ClimaGuard SPF when low-E glass blocks UV rays?

  • Low-E windows do reduce more of the UV rays than standard windows. However, low-E glass products are all different, and even the low-E products that claim the lowest UV transmission numbers don't reduce fading damage to household furnishings as well as ClimaGuard SPF. To slow down fading, it's important to block at least 99% of the UV rays.

What are the benefits of using ClimaGuard SPF?

  • The primary benefit is that it dramatically reduces fading of wood, fabrics and furnishings in the home with no visible darkening.

I don't live in the Sunbelt, do I really need to worry about UV exposure?

  • Yes. The National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, which tracks the Monthly UV Index for locations throughout the United States, reports that all areas are subject to high or very high UV exposure levels during certain months of the year. So even if you're not living in the Sunbelt, fading is still occurring. It just takes place at a slower rate.

So, ClimaGuard SPF stops fading, right?

  • No product can completely stop fading. But independent testing conducted using standards established by the textile industry indicates that ClimaGuard SPF significantly delays the fading of household furnishings versus clear and low-E window glass.

Can't I just put a window film over the glass instead of using ClimaGuard SPF?

  • Most homeowners install window film after they become aware of a fading problem, not before. Installing windows with ClimaGuard SPF before fading occurs will significantly delay the fading of home furnishings by eliminating 99.9% of UV transmission.
  • Window film usually requires special handling and cleaning procedures, whereas ClimaGuard SPF doesn't. It's completely protected between the panes of glass, so you can handle and clean your windows as you normally would.
  • Applying window film may also void a window manufacturer's warranty. Because ClimaGuard SPF is an integral component of the window system, the window warranty isn't compromised.

How much longer will my home furnishings last with ClimaGuard SPF glass compared to clear or low-E glass?

  • Many factors contribute to fade resistance, such as the color and materials of your home furnishings; the frequency, duration and intensity of UV exposure; variations in temperature and humidity in the home; and the way home furnishings are used and maintained. To come up with a better answer to this question than "it depends", we had an independent laboratory follow the colorfastness test procedures used by the textile industry. These test results indicate that ClimaGuard SPF will delay the visual evidence of fading of typical home furnishings by up to four times versus low-E glass and up to six times versus clear glass.

Doesn't heat also cause fading?

  • Heat doesn't cause fading, but it can speed it up. The solar infrared energy, or heat, coming in through a window accelerates the degradation of home furnishings. Fortunately, solar infrared energy can be effectively controlled by using spectrally selective low-E glass. The combination of a spectrally selective low-E coating with complete ultraviolet protection will provide the greatest protection from fading without compromising natural daylight. This is what is achieved through the use of ClimaGuard SPF with ClimaGuard Low-E.

Don't most fabrics and wood treatments have UV inhibitors built in?

  • Some modern fabrics and wood finishes do have UV-resistant properties, but most home furnishings are still vulnerable. ClimaGuard SPF stops 99.9% of damaging UV rays before they pass through the window, so you don't need to wonder which of your prized possessions will be protected and which are at risk.

Will my house plants die by blocking UV?

  • No, ultraviolet radiation provides no benefit to common house plants, and in some cases may actually harm them. Plants thrive best on neutral, untinted, visible light - the kind obtained by using ClimaGuard SPF.

What is the warranty for ClimaGuard SPF?

  • ClimaGuard SPF is covered by the product warranty provided by your window or door manufacturer. Window and door manufacturers should contact Guardian Industries for more information.
